Raiders shutout in Smiths Falls

The Nepean Raiders were shutout by Bradley Dobson and the rest of the Smiths Falls Bears on Fri. night, 3-0.

Dobson’s 33 saves combined with a Bears goal in each period doomed the visiting Raiders to their second-straight loss.

“You know what, they out competed us. We didn’t execute very well and we weren’t carrying out our assignments at all. They were, they showed up and understood the importance of the game,” said head coach Darcy Findlay.

Despite the loss, Nepean goalie Kyle Alaverdy was solid; making 35 saves on the night.

Smiths Falls Bears’ forward Michael Larose opened the scoring, taking a pass up the middle and beating Alaverdy through the five-hole.

Kyle Dowdall put the Bears up two in the second frame, wristing a shot past Alaverdy.

Ryan Gibson added an empty-netter in the game’s fleeting seconds for the Bears’ third marker.

The game saw the return of forward Liam Stagg, out with an upper-body injury since the beginning of the month.

The Raiders are in Shawville, QC, on for a rare Sat. night game against the Pembroke Lumber Kings. The match is the annual “Fish Findlay Classic” for charity, with the in-game proceeds going to support the Shawville District Minor Hockey Association.

Run by Findlay, a Shawville-native, the game has raised over $30,000 since its initiation.

“It’s always a good crowd, it’s a great atmosphere and it’s for a great cause. Our boys get pumped up for it, so it’s always fun,” said Findlay.
