Raiders outsmart Grads, snap losing skid at nine

Olivier Gauthier, James Buckley and Geoff Dempster had a goal each as the Nepean Raiders battled to a 3-1 road win over the Navan Grads on Sun.

The win sees the team’s losing streak halted after nine games, their last win coming Nov. 10 in a shootout victory over national number one Carleton Place.

“I was happy with Wednesday’s effort (against Hawkesbury) and the mood around the arena and today was a good game and another good effort from our guys,” said head coach Darcy Findlay.

“I just think everybody working for each other, I think the last couple weeks when we’ve been struggling, that’s what we lacked, a willingness to compete for one another and appreciating and trusting each other and the process.”

Liam Soulière turned aside 26 Navan opportunities as he continues his stellar season in between the pipes. Soulière has a .939 save percentage since the losing streak began a month ago.

Buckley’s second period goal was the second of his Raider career since being acquired at the top of the month. Findlay says the former Pembroke Lumber Kings’ offensive talents have impressed him.

“James is a skill player, he’s a big body. He’s going to have a lot of success in this league, he just has to tweak and fine-tune his game. I think as a skill player his opportunities are always going to be there and it’s up to me to push him to the next level,” said Findlay.

“He’s going to be a big part of this team for the next few years and that’s why we went after him. He’s a top 2000-forward.”

Nepean’s other deadline acquisition, forward Ryan Donovan, has also made an impact on his coach, despite not appearing on the scoresheet.

“Ryan brought a lot of needed energy. I’m a lunch bucket and workboots kind of guy and that’s exactly the style Ryan plays. I’m not looking for anything fancy just an aggressive north-south game that’s in your face between the whistles and staying out of the crap after. From what I’ve seen so far that fits his strengths,” said Findlay.

“That line of him, (Geoff) Dempster and Colin (McCaughey), they’re good down low, playing with speed and not overcomplicating the game. I’m very happy, and he’s brought some energy and some smiles in the dressing room as well.”

The Raiders will host Kemptville on Wed.
