Raiders falter in final frame as Lasers earn win

The Kanata Lasers scored four unanswered goals, three in the third period as they doubled up the Nepean Raiders 4-2.

The Raiders’ two goal first period – courtesy of the line of Silas Mattawashish, Antoine Belisle and Olivier Gauthier – was squandered as Nepean failed to beat Kanata G Logan Bateman in both subsequent periods.

Bateman made 29 saves for the victory. Liam Soulière turned aside 29 shots of his own in defeat.

“We count on (that line), they’re put into situations where they excel like the powerplay. I think they’re doing very well but we can’t count on them to score two to three goals every game,” said Nepean head coach Darcy Findlay.

“I don’t think that’s our concern, our concern is the secondary scoring, where it’s gone and where it’s going to come from.”

The loss means Nepean is now 0-4 against the Lasers this season. Kanata F Chad Merrell has been a particular thorn in the Raiders’ side with four points in three of those games.

Mattawashish’s two assists give him five points in four games since joining Nepean in late Dec.

The Raiders will host the Brockville Braves on Wed.
