by Romano Di Franco

The Nepean Raiders welcomed the Renfrew Wolves to the Nepean Sportsplex Steve Yzerman Arena for the first of two games in a week ahead. Renfrew came into this game having dropped back to back games against the Rockland Nationals while the Raiders themselves came off a 5-2 loss to the Smiths Falls Bears. For the starting goalies, Luke Suys got the start for the visiting Wolves. On the other end, Otsirakatste Brant made his second start in as many weeks.

For the first period, it was an even steven first period with both teams exchanging goals. For the Raiders, David Taylor and Tyler Smith scored the goals and as for the Renfrew Wolves, Edouard Souliere and Leonard Jamfy Jr scored the goals for the Wolves.

By the end of the first period, the Nepean Raiders outshot Renfrew 17-9.

The second period was all Raiders as they scored five times in the frame. Carson McGurn scored twice, Luka Benoit, Deklyn Campbell and Nathan Nadeau with his first goal in a Raiders uniform. Luke Suys was pulled out of the game following the goal by Nathan Nadeau.

Nepean outshot Renfrew 28-12 in the second period.

Things got wild in the third period when two separate brawls took place. Emmitt Robilliard and Angelo Protopapas were each tossed out of the game for the fights while Owen Kinghan and Nathan Nadeau were tossed out as well.

It was Nepean’s special teams that stole the show as they killed off all five penalties whilst going two for five on the powerplay. Overall the Raiders outshot the Wolves 49-34

Key performers included:

  • Carson McGurn (Nepean Raiders): Scored two goals and was named the first star of the game.
  • John Lumsden (Nepean Raiders): Contributed three assists, earning second star honors.
  • Joshua Penney (Renfrew Wolves): Registered two assists, making him the third star of the game.

Nepean outshot Renfrew 49-34 and had a strong power play, going 2-for-5, while Renfrew failed to convert on any of their five opportunities.

The second period was the turning point for Nepean, and the Wolves struggled with penalties, receiving several unsportsmanlike misconducts, which further impacted their play.

Nepean’s next game will take place on Thursday October 23rd and it will be on the road against the Cornwall Colts.
