English and Bertrand Score in Loss to Smiths Falls

by Romano Di Franco

The Nepean Raiders began their mini road trip by travelling to the Smiths Falls Memorial Centre to visit the Smiths Falls Bears. Nepean came off a wild high scoring game against the Kemptville 73s and the Bears on the other hand dropped a home and home set against the Rockland Nationals.

For the starting goalies, Otsirakatste Brant who was strong in his previous start in goal against the Renfrew Wolves last week got the start in goal. Ayo Ogini got the call for the Bears.

The Nepean Raiders and the Smiths Falls Bears began the game with some quality scoring chances. The only goal of the first period from Peyton Veltkamp’s third goal of the season. Nepean had two great chance in that first period alone. First from Luka Benoit and from Jack Yates respectively.

The Raiders still went on to outshoot the Smiths Falls Bears 12-9 in that opening frame.

Nepean answered back in the second period on the strength Ryan English’s second goal of the season. This was the second straight game he had scored at least a goal. Noah Bath and Karsten Barbeau got the assists for Nepean. Smiths Falls restored the lead from D.J Ott’s fifth goal of the campaign assisted from Jack Paquette and Gus Rabe.

The Raiders would tie the game at two from Anthony Bertrand’s third goal of the year assisted from Jack Yates and Luka Benoit. The Bears would close out the second period on Andrea Blais’ fourth goal of the season. Peyton Veltkamp and Davis Hails assisted on the tally.

Smiths Falls would score the first two goals of the third period from Travis Ouellette and Kade Hockenhull. Although Ryan Kinghan scored his first goal of the season, that would be it for the scoring.

For the three star selections, with his two point performance, Peyton Veltkamp was rewarded the first star for the Bears, with his 35-save performance, Ayo Ogini was given the second star for Smiths Falls, finally with his second goal in as many games Ryan English was named the third star for the Nepean Raiders.

The Raiders next game will take place on Sunday, October 19th at the Pembroke Memorial Centre for a 7:00PM puck drop.
