The Nepean Raiders played out the second game of their seasoning opening three game home-stand by welcoming the Cornwall Colts. Nepean came into this game having fueled themselves in a 4-2 victory on display of Carter Williamson’s hat-trick against the Renfrew Wolves. The Colts came into this game going 2-0 following wins against the Carleton Place Canadiens and the Kemptville 73s respectively.
For the starting goalies, John Gedratits who was dynamite in his last start was in goal again for the Raiders. Colton Rheaume who is off to a solid start for Cornwall was in goal for a third game in a row.
Four minutes into the game, the Raiders got on the board first when captain Luka Benoit buried the puck behind Rheaume for his first goal of the season. Raphael Tellier and Carter Williamson who is on a two-game point streak got the assists.
The Cornwall Colts got the next two goals from Adam Walker and Royce Butler respectively. Despite that, the Raiders outshot the Cornwall Colts 12-10 in that first period.
One minute and forty eight seconds into the second period, Brandon Rockwell expanded the Colts lead to 3-1 on the powerplay. The Nepean Raiders did not go down without a fight as Carter Williamson continued his monster September with his fourth goal of the season.
Cornwall restored their two goal lead when Adam Walker scored his second goal of the game on the powerplay. Nepean made this a one goal game again from Luka Benoit’s second goal of the game. The second period was about the Cornwall Colts and the Nepean Raiders exchanging goals. In the end, it was Nepean who outshot Cornwall 23-13.
The Raiders had three quality chances in the third period, Jackson Legault deflected a shot just wide of the net. The Raiders appeared to have scored the game tying goal from Luka Benoit but the goal was waived off when the play was ruled as goalie interference.
Last but not least, Carter Williamson nearly scored his fifth goal of the season and his second goal of the game, but the puck was swept to safety by the Cornwall defense.
The Colts closed out the scoring on Brandon Rockwell’s second goal of the game and third of the season.
The three star selection for the game is Brandon Rockwell who scored two goals and an assist. He was named the first star. Luka Benoit who scored twice in the game was rewarded the second star of the game for the Raiders. Adam Walker who also scored twice in the game is the third star for the Colts.
Notably, all the players who scored twice were named starts of the game.
The Raiders next game will take place on Wednesday September 24th vs the Brockville Braves at the Sportsplex. After that, the Raiders will close out the month with a home and home series against the Ottawa Junior Senators.
